Obama freezes some accounts belonging to Nigeria’s embassy because of corruption in President Jonathan’s administration

Nigeria and the United States of America government might be heading for a diplomatic row over the decision of the latter to freeze some of the accounts of the country’s embassy in Washington, DC.

Bank of America, M&T Bank and Wells Fargo received directive from the US government to close the accounts of the Nigerian embassy in Washington and its consulate in New York on suspicion of money laundering after traffic on the various accounts raised a red flag.

The decision is sequel to intelligence report generated by a panel comprising representatives of the US Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Department of Treasury, unknown to Nigerian embassy officials, to monitor wires and traffic in all the accounts operated by the embassy.

A credible online website http://www.huhuonline.com/ had reported yesterday that the US on Wednesday vowed to ignore a request by the federal government urging Bank of America and Wells Fargo to unfreeze Nigerian embassy’s bank accounts in Washington, DC, and New York.

The move, according to sources, is setting the stage for a potential showdown between the two countries with Nigeria also threatening to reciprocate by freezing the US embassy’s accounts in the country.

The online media stated that about $3.6 million dollars was said to have entered and left the accounts in under a month, the latest transaction being the withdrawal of $50,000 in hard cash by a top embassy staff.

In rejecting the federal government’s request, a source in the State Department was quoted as saying, “The Nigerian embassy was unable to respond to requests for clarification about payments and transactions into the account and there are reasonable grounds to believe that the accounts are being used as channels for money laundering and other financial crimes.’’

The source, who said the move was not targeted at the country’s embassy alone, told the online news blog that the embassies of two other unnamed African countries were affected by the freeze.

Also, an unnamed federal government official in the foreign affairs ministry was quoted to have stated, “We must not accept the illegal decision to shut down legitimate embassy accounts simply because we are in America.”

A source at the Nigerian foreign affairs ministry told Huhuonline.com was asked whether Nigeria will go the extra mile to institute retaliatory action which could be interpreted as a declaration of war, and he retorted: “I don’t know if it’s an act of war, but it’s outside all norms of international behaviour…we’ll see what happens when push comes to shove.”

Since the freezing of the bank accounts, the Nigerian embassy has been grounded as it can no longer conduct regular embassy business, such as paying bills and the salaries of diplomats.

As part of efforts to resolve the issue, the auditor-general of the federation and a team of auditors left for the US to begin auditing the accounts of the embassy.

Efforts by embassy officials to open new bank accounts with other American banks have so far been politely turned down, prompting consideration of reciprocal measures such as closing the bank accounts of the U.S embassy in Nigeria.

Nigerian embassy officials attempted to open other accounts but no success. In Nigeria, all those banks would have opened many accounts for these rogues just because of stupid target. yet, the will put money laundering notice in their banking hall but none has been apprehended for money laundering. They will continue to ask the average nigerians to fill forms upon forms but the rogues will withdraw without filling any form. God will expose the workers of evil.

  4. Nero says:

What is wrong with Nigerians? I see people here asking God to save Nigeria, lamenting that only God can save Nigeria, etc. What about YOU. Yes, YOU, reading this. God already did his part. He gave you a brain and the intellectual capacity to think, and the will to act. How about mobilizing for action? How about demanding change. We have seen it happen in Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Republic, in Latin America, and now in the Middle East – People Power works.

Now, instead of sitting on your collective butt and praying to God, do something or shut up.

I thank God to hear this happening before i die. It is known to all Nigerians what the former governor of Bayelsa, the jonathan master did before he was removed from his seat of power. But yet, the politicians confuses majority of Nigerians to vote GEJ as their leader. Why are we now complaining since we know whom we choose to represent us in the world?

    • sunny says:

what good does it do chasing shadows. True GEJ is the president, but does not mean he is responsible for every acts of Nigerians within & outside the country. He is to be held responsible if he does not address the issue.Let not loose sense of looking before we leap.

I believe that Nigeria is been dragged down the pit of hell to make a full of all Nigerians as God has destined us to be the head, now the plan of God cannot be changed.

We cannot allow this in Nigeria and we must seek the face of God and his intervention. This is also a call to all youths to carry their cross to God to eradicate all corrupted politicians – old and young.

These is very sad. I Hope this so called leaders, will listen and advance their mind on developing the country rather than all this corruptions.

  14. Praise says:

I had been writing on my facebook account on how corruption has destroy marrow and snew of my country Nigeria. If it was in this country we would have close our mouth but it has gone beyond. President G. Jonathan should be hold responsible for this. Nigerians in diaspara should rise up let us fight this corruption war to finish to restore the good image of our nation.

  15. Mario says:

I think that everything about Nigeria and her government is corruption because due to the fact I got in the news it seems that the corruption has grown wings into the shores of other country’s in abroad. President Jonathan will not deny the fact that he dosen’t know about the withdrawal of $ 3.6m Dollars that left the countrys’ account a month ago and $ 50 000 Dollars withdrawal of the member of the staff of the embassy. With all the money withdrawal they withdraw they wouldn’t give a good account for it. With all this proves one will know that corruption in Nigeria built it chammber in the Asorock, and unless they stoped it from their thing will never normalize in the whole federation.
