Nigerian Human Rights Activist, Shehu Sani narrate his experience of the historic day in Nigeria: June 12,1993

June 12, 1993 is a historic day in Nigeria because the freest and fairest Presidential Elections were held in Nigeria as adjudged by National and International observers. Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola won the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election but the then Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the Presidential Election supposedly for his selfish interest. The following is the statement released by the President of The Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria, Shehu Sani “Somebody asked me what I remembered about June 12, 1993. Well, I remember how I was arrested, thrown to State CID cell and later deposited in Kaduna prison. I remembered how prison warders stole food that belong to prisoners and brought in Indian hemp for inmates. I remembered how long term serving inmates sodomized new inmates with the knowledge of the Prison staff. I remembered how Condemned inmates were hanged on Thursdays. I remembered the day Shonekan took over and two weeks later, a stern looking prison Governor came to my cell, smiled and said: ‘come out and matched out’. I remembered after 3 weeks at home, Shonekan again ordered for my arrest after we held another pro-democracy rally. I remembered been charged to court for Sedition and unlawful assembly. I remembered been granted bail. I remebered Abacha took over. I remembered we organized a mass protest against Abacha. I remembered Abacha arrested me again. I remembered been taken to a Miltary Tribunal and sentenced to Life in prison for Treason. I remembered the 4 years we spent in Prison. I remembered the Black Maria, the Handcuffs and the Leg chains we wore. I pray not even my Foe see what we saw.”
