“Nobody Can Intimidate North Over Demand For More Oil Wealth-Governor Babangida Aliyu” – Naija Pundit

Insisting that the North had been short changed with regards to he sharing of the nation’s oil wealth, Niger State Governor and Chairman of the Northern Governor’s Forum, Babangida Aliyu, has reiterated the North’s demand for access to more oil wealth.

In fact Aliyu may have stunned some who heard about his words when he said there could not be peace in Nigeria without justice, apparently referring to the North’s desire for more oil wealth. This no doubt will cause people to believe that there may be a connection between the agitation for more funds and the Boko Haram insurgency, particularly as the CBN governor, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, had voiced such sentiments locally and internationally.

The governor had said at the opening of the annual conference and general assembly of Society for Peace Studies and Practice, at the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre, Jaji, Kaduna State yesterday that “It is now over twenty years that the nation’s revenue formula was looked at and we made that statement and believe me, since we made that statement, people have decided to read it their own way because they are looking for things to do.”

“We did not attack derivation because even during independence, there was the principle of derivation. But till tomorrow, I will continue to talk about the old oil wells that were there in the ocean 200 miles away. It does not belong to any state,” he said.

“There is a Supreme Court judgment on that and we do not understand why the National Assembly passed it into law. So, the President of that time, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, refused to sign that law and they overruled him. I want to know, maybe there are lawyers here to tell me, when there is a Supreme Court judgment on the ground and then later on the National Assembly passed the law, which one should I stand upon.

“That is all I am asking, but you see, every newspaper you pick today, you will see column writers giving it wrong interpretations. But believe me we shall not be intimidated because we know without equity there will be no peace”.

He further said “everybody wants the governor to do this and that and our diamond and gold has not come out from the ground and even our oil from the Chad Basin has not come out from the ground.

“So, there is a limit to what any Northern state would be able to do. If you hear us cry for the improvement of the revenue formula, it is because we believe that we are being short changed.”
