Nigeria Supreme Court Sack five Governors

The Supreme Court on Friday sacked five State Governors namely Ibrahim Idris (Kogi), Muritala Nyako (Adamawa), Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa), Aliyu Wamako (Sokoto), and Liyel Imoke (Cross River).
A seven-member panel of the Supreme Court chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Dahiru Musdapher, ruled that their tenure ended on May 28, 2011.
In a unanimous judgment read by Justice Walter Onnoghen, the Supreme Court ruled that their tenure of four years started from May 29, 2007 when they took their first oath of office and oath of allegiance.
The judgment was in an appeal by the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) governorship candidate in Adamawa state, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); the appellants were challenging the decision of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, which upheld the decision of an Abuja Federal High Court that extended the tenure of the five State governors beyond May 29, 2011.
Justice Onnoghen stated, “The oath they took in 2007 remain valid. To accede to the request of Respondents (governors) is to bring uncertainty to the Constitution. It is to continue the cycle of impunity”
Other members of the Supreme Court panel are Justices Mahmud Mukhtar, Chukwuma Ene, Ibrahim Coomasie, Olufunlola Adekeye and Mary Peter-Odili.
