President Jonathan lobby Senators on Removal of Fuel Subsidy

National Assembly members are still adamant about their objection to the removal of fuel subsidy.
Members of the Senate and House of Reprsentatives reached a near unanimous decision to hinge the removal of fuel subsidy on four conditions.
The conditions are for the Presidency to issue National Assembly members a strategic plan on how refineries will work effectively and effieiently in Nigeria, a broad plan on how the Presidnecy intends to alleviate the sufferings Nigerians will endure if Fuel subsidy is scraped, Statistics on the Effects of Fuel Subsidy in the Economy of Nigeria, and publication of a list of Fuel Subsidy beneficiaries.
A member of the National Assembly who prefer to be anonymous stated “We have presented these tall demands to our principal officers as conditions for the acceptance of the government’s plans to withdraw fuel subsidy. We said they should take all these conditions to Jonathan and get satisfactory answers before we can back him. Our position cuts across all parties in the National Assembly. We do not want a situation whereby we will be tricked to concede to the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy without palliative measures to cushion the effect for the masses. The executive claimed that the fuel subsidy may take about N1.5trillion this year. But it has not given us the breakdown; how fuel was imported by companies and the list of the beneficiaries. What most members of the National Assembly are suspecting is that the subsidy so far this year may not be more than N500billion. At the end of the day, if there are no palliative measures, we will be putting our democracy in jeopardy because Nigerians can revolt.”
Another Senator stated “We were all angry that the President merely defended plans to withdraw fuel subsidy without any statistics to back his arguments. Even when the President addressed us, he could not tell us the palliative measures. We were all shocked. And when Jonathan maintained that the economy might collapse, if the fuel subsidy remains in place, he did not substantiate his claim with statistics. We cannot just take his submissions hook, line and sinker.”
It is not confirmed, but sources said President Jonathan met with key members of the Senate on thursday night.
Senators that were supposedly present at the meeting are: Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), Deputy Senate Leader Abdul Ningi, Chief Whip Hayatu Gwarzo, Deputy Chief Whip Hosea Agboola, Minority Leader George Akume, Deputy Minority Leader Ahmed Rufai Sani, Minority Whip Ganiyu Solomon, and Deputy Minority Whip Abu Ibrahim.
It can be noted that Key members of the House of Representatives were neither invited nor present at the meeting held on thursday night. What are you thinking?
