PDP may not care about Nigeria Constitution

Ruling Party in Nigeria, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), barred these individuals from competing under the platform of the PDP in the Bayelsa State Gubernatorial Election Primary: Mr. Alaibe Ndutimi, Mr. Ben Murray Bruce, Mr. Timipre Marun Sylva, and Mr. Igali Godknows Boladet.
According to reports, Mr. Ben Murray Bruce was barred from competing because he is a dual citizen of Nigeria and the United States of America.
This action by the PDP may be uncontitutional because subsection 177 under the State Executive Section of the Nigeria Constitution states “A person shall be qualified for election to the office of Governor of a State if (a) he is a citizen of Nigeria by birth; (b) he has attained the age of thirty-five years; (c) he is a member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party; and (d) he has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.” http://www.nigeria-law.org/ConstitutionOfTheFederalRepublicOfNigeria.htm#State_Executive
Furthermore, Subsection 28(1) under the Citizenship section of the Nigeria Constitution states “Subject to the other provisions of this section, a person shall forfeit forthwith his Nigerian citizenship if, not being a citizen of Nigeria by birth, he acquires or retains the citizenship or nationality of a country, other than Nigeria, of which he is not a citizen by birth.” http://www.nigeria-law.org/ConstitutionOfTheFederalRepublicOfNigeria.htm#Chapter_3
Mr. Bruce released this statement after he was disqualified by the PDP “I believed in my heart as a democrat when I entered the race for the governorship of Bayelsa state that the race would be fair, democratic and competitive but it has now become clear that it is not a competition but a coronation. I want my followers and the people of Bayelsa to know that to quit is revolting to every instinct in my body. I am not a quitter but I was not allowed to run. I was eliminated before the race started. To my followers, though I may not get the chance to be our governor, I will continue the fight for free and affordable education, quality healthcare, affordable housing, free maternal healthcare, development of the agricultural sector and the dignity of all Bayelsans. To the young generation, I urge you not to give up on your political dreams, do not leave the process but continue to struggle for your rights. Continue to struggle for economic empowerment. Continue to struggle for justice and change and in the end we will prevail. When I began this race I said, if I run I may lose but if I don’t run we will always lose. The race has raised political, economic and social issues which any governor cannot ignore. Because of this race, we are now engaged in a debate about our future. So, in a sense, my candidacy has not been in vain. ”
Reports indicate Mr. Ben Murray Bruce was born in Nigeria. What are you thinking?

  1. Hello. This post was really remarkable, particularly since I was searching for thoughts on this subject last Saturday.

  2. Africas says:

Ben has done more to the people of Nigeria despite of his dual citizenship,he should be allowed ,he a great ijaw man,a grand patron of some progressive youth group,a father to the ijaw female student.

  3. Name says:

Mr. Ben Murray Bruce should be allow to test the PDP primaries if the quoted portions of the constitution of Nigeria is correct. He should not be disqualified because of dual citizenship since he did not acquire Nigerian citizenship. There should be a level play ground for all polical actors in the race.
